120 & 122 Hurontario Street

Two and three bay, two-storey, buff-brick buildings with rich ornament at parapet (c. 1885).

Ground Floor – Original elements either removed, or totally concealed by shop-fronts out of keeping with character of Main Street. Gablets to piers at no. 120, and flashed projection between, may echo original wooden elements. Multiple elements here reduce tall original storey to pilastered, modern frontage with small display windows under modern canopies at either side of central entry. At no. 122, variety of materials (mainly red) create opaque shop-front, with typically glazed area occupied instead by stucco panel and central, back-lit sign.

Second Floor – Reversal of ground floor conditions, with bright, red paint and replacement windows at no. 120, and original materials and finishes at no. 122. At no. 122, tall, 1/1 windows (behind aluminum storms) have stone sills. Segmental brick arches have pointed-arch hood-mouldings which drop at upper jambs to end at brick stringcourses with central, dog-toothed band. Second floor is crowned with segmental-arch machicolees built off stepped lower corbelling, with recessed crosses in wall above.

Parapet – Lower parapet has projecting stringcourse, then dog-toothed course, then two corbelled courses below several courses of plain masonry, with corbelled upper courses and small, metal cornice at top. Pilasters extend through decorative masonry to terminate in piers built off stepped corbelling in pilaster below. Piers, having chamfered corners, comprise several courses and are capped with pyramidal metal copes. Remnant of decorative metal parapet-railing remains at no. 120 only.
