145, 147, 149, Hurontario Street Two-storey, six-bay, classically inspired, (painted and sandblasted) brick and cast-stone building (c. 1910). Ground Floor Shop-fronts with Vitrolite at piers and recessed entries, and with corrugated-aluminum stall-risers and aluminum window-framing elements. Front steps and tiled landing (with hexagonal tiles and guilloche border) are contemporary with shop-fronts (c. 1950s). Modest band of corrugated aluminum also forms cornice at ground floor. Signage is diverse and inappropriate, with yet another plastic-clad canopy to north, and back-lit sign to south. Second Floor Divided into two, slightly projecting bays, each with three rectangular, window apertures with wider central bay, giving ABA rhythm. Wall is of painted brick while projecting elements are generally in painted cast-stone. At windows, thick, ashlar sills are built off projecting brick aprons, while elegant, panelled piers of classical inspiration support full entablature, including convex masonry frieze and fine cornice. Glazing is original, comprising large, single-pane lower sashes and rectangular, leaded-glass transoms windows. Parapet Upper entablature crowns central area of building, with corbelled brick and cast-stone architrave and rustic, pargetted frieze, the latter capped by huge aluminum flashing. Tapering, square-section, clay chimney-pots at south wall are rare indication of fireplaces. |
