20 Fourth Street East Tall, 2½ storey, gabled, rug-brick house with recessed pointing and 3/1 windows, and with slightly later, single-car garage to right built of similar materials (c. 1930). Description - House is built of two-tone, brownish-red rug brick, with flat arches (and steel lintels) throughout. Elevated ground floor is reached by flight of concrete stairs to concrete landing, without handrail. Entry has four-pane, panelled wooden storm door, with slab door with upper windows behind. Front window has large, central 3/1 window and smaller 3/1 windows at either side, all with taller bottom sashes (all behind two-pane storms). Sills are of pre-cast concrete, and flat-arches have brick soldiers above and stacked stretchers at upper jambs. Second floor, fenestration consists of a similar 3/1 window at either side (with two-pane storms), and with window sills and heads as described. Main soffits are clad in beaded boards. Full-width gable has metal pitch at base, and wall above is clad in cement tiles. Gable houses central 3/1 window with simple casings and modest wooden sill. Two vents, of recent origin, occupy peak of gable. Gable soffits are also finished with beaded boards, and plain fascias have shingle moulding. Roof is clad in grey asphalt shingles, and a tall, utilitarian chimney is built against east wall, and rises well beyond eaves. |
