249 Ste. Marie Street Tall, two-storey, hip-roofed, red-brick house with impressive verandah and with gabled projecting bays at front, north and south sides (c. 1900). Description Verandah extends across full width of front and returns into projecting wing at north side. Low-pitched roof is supported by slender, turned posts built off deck below. Profiled handrail spans between posts, with balustrade of sturdy, turned balusters built off bevelled bottom rail. Beams above have small, wooden spindles spanning to thin horizontal rail below. Masonry is red-brick throughout, built off tall, local-stone foundation. At ground floor, front door is original, half-glazed wood with lower panels, and with vinyl transom window above. Front window aperture has 1/1 windows either of central single sash (all are vinyl units), under original, dentilled transom and transom window. Segmental-arch above has hood-moulding which drops to meet upper course of peripheral, brick band-course having central, projecting headers. Fenestration at south, projecting bay is 1/1 vinyl throughout, within segmental-arched apertures with hood-moulding as described. At second floor, windows are again 1/1 vinyl replacements, with arches and peripheral band-course as at ground floor. Soffits are clad in aluminum. At roof level, all gables have lower, shingled pitch, and wall clad in bands of standard and chamfered-butt shingles. Each gable contains rectangular, louvred vent within plain jambs. Gable fascias are divided into small, square coffers, each coffer housing a central, moulded wooden disc. One rebuilt, square-section chimney, with recessed panel at south side and triple, corbelled courses at head, is above chimney-breast at south wall. Roof is clad in dark-grey, patterned, asphalt shingles.
