265 Pine Street

Symmetrical, two-storey, hip-roofed, dichromatic brick house with elegant, recessed porch, wide, segmental-arch windows, decorated gablet and one original chimney (c. 1880).

Ground Floor – Apparent verandah comprises central porch between projecting, rectangular bays and is extended visually extended by broad fascia above. Entry has half-glazed, panelled doors with bolection mouldings (behind metal storms), under stained-glass, segmental-headed, transom window. Red-brick voussoirs and flush, buff-brick hood-mouldings drop at jambs to meet peripheral, buff-and-red-brick band-course. Large front windows have very wide, segmental arches with voussoirs and hood-mouldings as described, and thick painted sills. Fenestration consists of huge, plate-glass, lower sash with stained-glass transom windows above (respectively behind six-pane and three-pane wooden storms). Porch roof and fascia are supported by slender, central posts with tapered capitals under ornamental brackets, which support both beam and soffits, and by similar brackets only at outer corners of bays.

Second Floor - 1/1 windows (behind metal storms) are within segmental-arch apertures, with window-heads and band-course as at ground floor. Central aperture has half-glazed and panelled door (behind metal storm). Small, central gable has original, round-headed, 1/1 window within rubbed-brick voussoirs and typical buff-brick band above. Beaded soffit boards are supported by six brackets (similar to ground floor) gable has decorative scissor-truss with punctured lower braces and trefoil at apex, and shingle-moulding at fascia. Period chimney exists at north wall, with buff-brick base having bevelled top course, and multiple corbelling under three plain courses at head. South chimney is rebuilt and without period details. Roof is clad in red asphalt shingles and gutters are ogee-type aluminum.

North Elevation – Side elevation is relatively simple compared to front. Projection of square-bay window is apparent at RH side, from which buff-and-red-brick band-course extends across full depth of building, including pitched-roof extension (old) at LH side. Extension has bricked-up aperture at RH side and typical window to left. Fenestration at main block consists of tall, 1/1 windows at either side (behind 2/2 wooden storms). Windows (also with four-pane wooden storms) and band-course are as at ground floor. Soffit boards are supported by wooden brackets, two at outer sides and two centrally placed.
