280 Hurontario Street Apparently octagonal bank with roof-top lantern and attached, drive-through porch (c. 1990). Description The octagon, once associated with European Baptistries and Chapter Houses, and more recently Daniel Fowler - and even with barns - is here adapted to a drive-through, suburban bank. (Building is not, in fact, octagonal, but rectangular extension to rear is not so prominent from Hurontario Street.) Walls have pre-cast stone at lower levels, with painted render above. Pre-painted aluminum-frames windows and doors are deeply recessed within elevations under deep fascias adorned with variety of back-lit signs, including the Royal Bank (former) logo. Octagonal roof, set behind peripheral walls, has pre-painted metal roofing rising to octagonal lantern or clerestory, above which similar roofing extends to peak. Drive-through porch at south side seems an unfortunate appendage to apparent octagon and is essentially without features - aside from the infinite convenience it doubtless affords. |
