57, 59 & 61-63 Hurontario Street

Three similar, three-bay, two-storey units (c. 1890s), with varying painted brick treatments.

Ground Floor – Original shop-fronts and glazing remain at nos. 57 and 59, but are eradicated at 61 (which is clad in Angestone). These include fine, decorative wood-work at transoms and upper glazing of large, frosted panes, with similar glazing above central recessed entries.

Upper Floor – Polychrome brickwork, with continuous stone sills and large stone keystones, is visible only at no. 59, with round-headed, 2/2 windows framed by tall, pointed-arch voussoirs. Panel of canted, brick soldiers runs beneath each window. Wall surface within each unit is framed by full-height, brick pilasters and dog-toothed and corbelled bands of brick above. Nos. 57 and 61 have painted masonry, former in dark blue and yellow and latter in faded, peeling white. Windows are aluminum replacements at no. 57, with round-arch heads crudely covered, while no. 61 has 1/1 replacement windows (behind aluminum storms).

Parapet – Parapet is machicolated, dichromatic brick with unusual, triangulated arches above and niches below. Corbelled, dog-toothed cornice crowns parapet, with moulded stone copings above. Pilasters terminate in small, decorated, brick piers with carved stone pinnacles above: all four remain.
