81 & 83 Hurontario Street Three-bay, three-storey, dichromatic brick building (c. 1875) with later entry to upper floors at north side, and rebuilt corner above, and with attractive little brick pavilion at rear. Ground Floor Original material is either lost or hidden, with tiled piers at either side, low, tiled stall-risers, and aluminum-framed shop fronts flanking recessed central entry. Curved plastic canopies cut ground floor visually in half, below deep, vertically boarded fascia. Two-storey brick bay to LH side is entry to upper floors, and is of more recent construction but using old bricks. Glazed aluminum-framed door is set in round-headed opening with keystone, and period fan-light exists over deep, profiled wooden transom. Second Floor Red-brick walls with buff-brick voussoirs comprising projecting keystones in segmental arches, and hood mouldings which drop at jambs to end with corbelled bricks. Windows are 1/1 replacements set within original cases and over ashlar stone sills. Brick colours and patterns at LH side differ from elsewhere in elevation and indicate rebuilding of this area following demolition of northern part of hotel. Third Floor Same as second floor, ending with two projecting bands built off corbelled headers and stretchers. Paired ghost marks between corbels indicate former presence of wooden brackets (shown in period photographs within the entrance at the north). Cornice Cornice is gone, but stones built into brickwork indicate former presence of supporting framework (existence is again confirmed by historic photos). Parapet Simple, low, red-brick parapet with upper projecting buff-brick band caps building, and this is cement-rendered. Brick building at rear Behind building, is attractive, one-storey (painted), brick pavilion with lean-to roof between brick parapets, and with attenuated, 2/2 windows flanking recent glazed door, all in segmental-arch openings. A wood-stove chimney remains at LH side wall. |
