137, 139 & 141 Hurontario Street - Pt. Lot 19 Plan 282, By-law No. 84-46 Hamilton Block, numbers 137, 139 and 141 Hurontario Street, constructed in 1897 by W. A. Hamilton, Collingwood, postmaster, - this building housed the Federal building was completed during World War One. Designed by renowned architect F. T. Hodgson, the construction materials included deep red pressed brick, trimmed with Duntroon freestone. It was Mr. Hodgson’s intention to design an interim postal facility which allowed for easy first storey alteration when the federal government recognized the need for a new publically owned facility. Upon completion it was regarded as a substantial looking structure, neat though not gaudy, which allowed the postal facility to command a Main Street posture. This building is indeed worthy of historical designation. |
