143 Hurontario Street - S. Pt. Lot 19, Plan 282, By-law No. 85-31 In 1897, Postmaster W. A. Hamilton, the son of Collingwood’s first mayor, purchased a 14 foot strip of land between his post office building to the north and a further block of established main street buildings to the south. Mr. Fred. T. Hodgson, renowned Architect and Designer of his post office building, created a storefront plan for this small "infill" A well defined two storey Victorian storefront evolved. The frontage was so small that access to the upstairs had to be gained by way of the post office building. This legal technicality was written into the Registry Records. The brick storefront was laid in the stretcher bond tradition and contains roofline raised brick irregular coursing. The shop front contains a fine wooden entablature. The building has had many tenants. It first became a tailor shop operated by Herbert Alberry and later by Robert Folliotte. When the building changed owners in 1933 a new business, Hughes and Wheeler Insurance Company, located on the site. This building face has retained its original storefront character and provides us with a clear description of a typical Nineteenth Century Brick Victorian commercial "infill."
