199 Third Street - Plan 221 Lots 6 to 8, By-law No. 83-45 Built in the Italianate tradition for the toner family, early coal and lumber merchants, this home has retained its elegance with minor alterations since 1882. The interior of the home features a circular staircase, marble fireplaces, plaster medallions and a built in buffet. The exterior brick work laid in the common bond tradition is highlighted by protruding quoins and plinth in lighter contrasting brick. Decorative brick work adorns the original chimney as well as highlighting the window openings. Brick arch work and keystones decorate the window surrounds in a unique 3-tiered stepped arch design. The window lights are 2/2. The main front façade contains unique, French doors with recessed mullion and moulded panels below the 2/2 lights. The home has a heavily bracketed low hip roof with an east side gable featuring a combination of corniced boxed brackets. The main door location is off centre right on the façade and is plain with embrasure featuring a recessed stained glass transom light and a semi-circular light on each main door. Architect, B. Napier Simpson, has complemented the home with a delicately designed regency treillage, a recent porch improvement. The projecting frontispiece and Victorian-style porch were removed. Additional features include an overhanging balcony on the east façade face with wooden railing, decorative bargeboard, a bulls eye window, and consoles below the floor of the balcony. The cast iron fence and gates are held by smooth dressed stone fence posts. The home has only changed hands twice since its construction, and its excellent condition is due to the care shown by concerned owners.
