Plan 144 N Pt. Blk. B & Pt. Lot 3 Con 8, By-law No. 83-45

Minnesota Street is blessed with many lovely old Collingwood residences. This home, dating back to the 1870’s was quickly purchased by David Wilson after the following advertisement was placed in the March 29, 1883, Enterprise:

“For sale or rent – Minnesota Street brick building, hard and soft water, woodshed and stable. Possession 10th of April. Apply to William Hamilton.”

Hamilton was the original owner and it is not known at this time how long he lived in the home, who built the home or the selling price in 1883.

The home exhibits post-georgian or neo-classical elements which derive from the style of work started by the Adam Brothers in England. The gracefully proportioned styling of these elements is reflected in this 2 storey brick home laid in the stretcher bond tradition. Raised quoins in offset brick and plinth highlight the symmetry.

The hip roof is babbled with boxed cornices highlighting frieze dentil decorations below the fascia and soffit and well proportioned dual bracketing along the roof line.

The main façade windows display radiating voussoir hoods and lugsills and are 2 sashed double hung containing 6/6 lights. The projecting 2 storey central frontispiece, a later addition, contains a semi-circular window and a segmental embrasured centre door with arched radiating voussoirs. The door contains moulded and decorated rails with lovely partly glazed beveled panel lights and features a recessed leaded glass transom.

The residence is well situated on a lovely well maintained lot. The owners have taken great care in preserving this early Collingwood Century Home.
