242 Third Street - Plan 469, Lots 3 & 5, Lane; RP 51R-26001, Parts 4 & 5, By-law No. 80-1 This 2 ½ storey brick home was the combined plan of Mr. Charles Pitt, owner of the Bertram Lumber Company, and Mr. John Wilson, local Collingwood architect. Having a keen interest in displaying a large moose head in his new home, Mr. Pitt commissioned Mr. Wilson to adapt house plans from an older home in Toronto to suit his needs. The result in 1908 was the construction of this heavily Georgian influenced Neo-Classical home typical of the 1830 ear. Constructed with solid oak the exterior brick is laid in the common bond fashion. Palladian dormers are set in back and sides, while a monumental pediment and column portico adorns the front façade. A ram’s horn motif is carried throughout the house: on octagonal stair columns, on top of the ionic columns inside the front door surround and also on the exterior ionic columns. A unique balcony protrudes from the second floor within the monumental pediment. An elliptical window is included with the pediment. Brick alternating radiating voussoirs adorn the window and door surround heads on the façade. Immaculately maintained in its grand tradition, the front façade of this home adds some unique architectural designs to the community while it displays the craft from our community’s past.
