291 & 293 Pine Street

The Soutenburg House

Built in 1904 with elements of the fanciful queen Anne Revival style, this regal-looking edifice has occupied a commanding place on the Pine Street block between Fourth and Fifth streets for more than a century. With its twin stacked bay windows, centre roof gable and formal porch spanning both front entries, the building reads as one large house. In fact, it is a semi-detached dwelling which local sawmill owner Peter Stoutenburg had constructed with an apparent view to eventually providing a hoem for two of his many daughters.

Summary of Cultural Heritage Value

This property contains a semi detached dwelling believed to be built in 1904 for local sawmill owner Peter Stoutenburg. This structure is a good example of multifamily, urban accommodation executed with Queen Anne style elements.

The Classical open porch with its triple column clusters, the stacked bay window with decorated gables, doorcase, and centre roof gable incorporate some of the more stylish manufactured building components available at that date.

This semi detached dwelling is important in maintaining the scale and residential character of the streetscape.
