Likely built c.1880 by local carpenter Daniel Swalm, the dwelling on the property was first occupied by saloon keeper Neil McPhail, a recent arrival from Chicago, Illinois.

In 1889, McPhail founded a local soda water and ginger ale manufacturing business. The next long term occupants (1920 to 1977) of the property were retired farmers Thomas and Elizabeth Stephens and their descendants.

This dwelling has maintained its integrity as an example of late 19th century Italianate styling
